Our contribution, which is based on hitherto unanalyzed archive material, traces the plans for an interdisciplinary medium of publication that were pursued in the sixties of the 19th century by a circle of philosophers, philologists, and historians centering around Wilhelm Dilthey and Wilhelm Scherer. The reconstruction of this project brings to light that the members of this circle reflected on the foundations of the historical and philological disciplines and insisted on the development of comprehensive theories and the interdisciplinary cooperation of various fields of study. This case study thus reveals that some widely held assumptions about the role of German “positivism” in the humanities are in need of revision.
