My initial exposition will reveal that the construction of precursors is a natural result within the framework of a descriptive, academic recording of historical facts. During this process, we assume the underlying supposition that academic terms, paradigms, schools of thought etc. are engendered independent of prevailing ‘historical fields of experience’. Finally, considering settlement archaeology and its concepts as established in the 19th and 20th centuries, I attempt to show that paradigms come into being in the process of distinct ‘historical fields of experience’ and thus that there is no such a thing like precursors.
