Gelehrte Gemeinschaft und wissenschaftlicher Großbetrieb: Hochschulbau als Spiegel von Wissenschaftsidee und ‐praxis im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert

Abstract The paper deals with the rise and development of university‐building in nineteenth‐century Germany. It describes its functional changes as a result of the diversification of disciplines as well as a reaction to the rapid expansion of the universities. These upheavels finally also undermined the stylistic consensus on the outer design of university‐buildings all over Germany up to the end of the century. The disintegration of this consensus in favour of varying patterns of style or design at the beginning of the 20th is interpreted as loss of „Bildung” itself.
