Research on the emergence of scientific disciplines has become a current topic of scientific historical work in recent years. Scientific disciplines are structures of cognitive social character whose geneses represent cornerstones in the history of scientific knowledge. As to the initial history of a science, such stages may be distinguished as its prehistory, emergence and consolidation. This development is dertermined above all by qualitative changes of the knowledge about a particular subject‐matter (1) against the background of concrete material and ideational needs of society (2), and the foundation of specific institutions forming the basis of existance of a scientific discipline (3). Geology is taken as an example to illustrate the emergence of a natural science at the turn from the 18th to the 19th century.
