The question, if and to what extent the development of medicine is influenced by social development, has been discussed fairly often. The opposite problem, the influence of medicine in shaping and changing the system of social roles, has rarely been raised. Under the broader heading of “Medicine and social change” the focus of an international conference at the “Zentrum für Interdisziplinäre Forschung”/Bielefeld (FRG) was: what does medicine (the theory and practice of medicine, the system of medical care, health policies, professional policies [ e.g. against ‘quacks’], medical ethics etc.) contribute to shaping and enforcing social roles ( e.g. of nurses, women, children, the elderly, prostitutes, homosexuals etc.).
