Northwest Missouri State University includes a battery of placement/advisory tests to assess academic skills required for college‐level work. Each skill area tested is associated with a course in the revised general studies program and formally linked to one of 17 institution wide instructional goals. In order to help the university community understand and convey the design of its assessment program, Patricia Van Dyke, coordinator of assessment, developed a matrix that follows each goal along the traditional pathways students take. Here she describes methods of developing and measuring achievement of each goal at critical points.
