Homogeneous isotropic cosmological models driven at early times by a coherent scalar field and the vacuum polarization are considered. Both effects can lead to the existence of a finite minimal value of the scale factor and an inflationary stage of expansion. The early as well as the late time behaviour of the cosmological evolution depends critically on the ratio of the contribution from the vacuum polarization and the scalar field.
