The mean velocities derived from the proper motions of sunspot groups show a similar behaviour as the torsional oscillation found by H OWARD and L ABONTE (1980), and the mean velocities have also a meridional component which changes according to the solar cycle. Calculation of the Lorentz force from a kinematical mean‐field dynamo shows that both of these components are a natural consequence of an α–ω dynamo acting in the solar convection zone.
