We study the dynamics of a spheroidal galaxy with a gravitating polar ring whose plane is perpendicular to the equator. We consider this problem in the tidal approximation and derive a closed set of equations, which we reduce to a seventh‐order differential equation. We solve the resulting equation to find that perturbations from the polar ring deform the spheroid into a non‐stationary rotating triaxial ellipsoid with linear internal velocity field.
