Due to the fast development of observational techniques, observations of high‐redshift galaxies and detailed studies of nearby galaxies bring surprises every week. Many quite unexpected discoveries have been made over the last years, which have changed our views about galaxy formation and evolution substantially. I review some of the most important and unexpected observational facts, which bring changes even to paradigms. (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
