We show that a model of the Galaxy with a two‐component outer ring of class R 1 R 2 can explain many large‐scale morphological features of the galactic spiral structure. The Carina‐Sagittarius arm may consist of two ascending segments of outer R 1 and R 2 rings, which almost touch each other near the Carina region. The Perseus and Crux arms can be partially identified with the descending segments of the R 2 ring. A model of a two‐component outer ring can also explain the existence of some tangential directions.
