We suggest to combine the mean‐field description of the galactic dynamo with a shell description of small‐scale turbulence for high values of hydrodynamic and magnetic Reynolds numbers. The model allows us to keep the balance of energy and realizes the kinematic and non‐linear regimes of the magnetic field generation. The suggested approach gives a possibility to study the role of magnetic helicity in the generation process. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
