The hypothesis of a generation or triggering of solar activity by the combined planetary tides on the solar surface is examined by a search for correlations between the sunspot numbers and the tidal amplitudes, using averaged values of several time scales (between one day and eleven years), and taking non‐linear amplitude effects into account. The result is negative: There exist no detectable correlations.
