The parameters of solar motion and velocity ellipsoid are derived from radial velocities of spectroscopically well defined samples of the main sequence and of the giants type III stars. A short discussion of the statistical method applied is given. The results found indicate that the parameters of the velocity ellipsoid chosen arbitrarily for a group of stars does not always represent correctly the sample observed.
