Abstract On the basis of orbital elements, parallaxes and astrophysical characteristics of all known double stars within 10 pc, individual values of angular momentum of these systems are calculated or estimated. Further, mean and maximal values of angular momentum from rotation of main sequence stars are computed on the hypothesis of rigid body rotation. Both groups of results are plotted in a logarithmic mass‐angular momentum‐diagram. The orbital angular momenta (of binary stars) as well as the rotational angular momenta (of single stars) are approximately proportional to the squares of the masses (of the systems or stars), but for the same mass the orbital angular momenta are 10 1 to 10 3 times greater than the rotational angular momenta. The interpretation of the diagram depends upon whether the observed „single stars” are really single stars or not.
