The interstellar reddening has been calculated as a function of the interstellar absorption and of the observed spectral energy distribution for 25 different types of stars Bo–M 2 la–V. The ratio R = A v/ E B − V of absorption to reddening and the reddening relative to a Bo‐star η = E B − V (Sp)/ E B − V (Bo) are approximately linear functions of the intrinsic colour ( B − V ) 0 . A discussion of empirical data gives R = 3.05 ± 0.15, and (for M‐supergiants) η = 0.90 ± 0.05. The empirical reddening lines E U − B / E B − V and E B − V / E [ R − I ] have been determined from observations of supergiant stars of all spectral types.
