Atmospheric state variables from a Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model are combined with analyzed cloud base heights in a neural network, with the objective to model corresponding cloud water profiles. It was found that the neural network was incapable of resolving the inherently non‐linear vertical cloud water distributions. Copyright © 2004 Royal Meteorological Society
