We have examined the temporal development of an established proxy for turbulent intensity for the mesosphere/lower thermosphere region above Tromsø (70°N, 19°E) for the period 1999 to present. We find an indication of steadily increasing turbulence in the upper mesosphere and the lower thermosphere and decreasing turbulence in the mid‐mesosphere, the height of the demarcation between positive and negative trends varying somewhat with season. Although beyond the scope of this study, anthropological sources, causing lower atmosphere warming and upper atmosphere cooling, are strong candidates for the underlying cause of the trend.
