This article studies the consensus problem for a class of general second‐order multi‐agent systems (MASs) with communication delay and variable topology. We first consider the case with time delay but un‐variable topology and obtain sufficient conditions for exponential consensus. Then, based on the obtained conditions for the un‐variable topology case, the conditions of the consensus for the case with time delay and variable topology are analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the derived consensus conditions is illustrated by numerical examples.
