Abstract This paper considers the problem of estimating the frequency response of an unknown plant from impulse or step response measurements, possibly with non‐ideal step signals. The proposed method is direct (no model identification of the plant is needed) and it can be applied using a single set of data generated by the plant, with no need for specific experiments nor iterations. The frequency response of the plant, at a desired frequency, is estimated by a virtual experiment generating a filtered version of the data set. Numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the method.
