New Zealand chemistry special issue : New Zealand has 8 Universities and a population of almost 5 million people, spread across its 1 600 km length. With a land area (268 000 km 2 ) greater than the UK (242 000 km 2 ), surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea (located at 40° South, 175° East, on the opposite side of the world to Spain), and relatively isolated (Australia is our closest neighbour; a 3 hour flight away), New Zealand has a rich natural landscape, and unique flora and fauna. We are a relatively young country: New Zealand's first University, Otago University, celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019. This special issue celebrates the wide range of chemistry research being carried out in New Zealand and by our alumni. We are grateful to Michael Crawford (Dunedin) for kindly generating the Front Cover image from a concept provided by Prof. Sally Brooker.
