Zinc complexes possess strong emission and low cytotoxicity with a relatively small molecular weight, generally accompanied with a large Stokes shift and good photon stability. Here, recent developments involving Zn(II) metal complexes for biological applications are reviewed, including bioimaging, molecular and protein recognition, as well as photodynamic therapy.
