Palladium(II) catalysis allows various aerobic oxidation reactions, but the mechanism of the regeneration of the active catalytic species remains, in many cases, undetermined. In recent years, considerable effort has been directed toward the comprehension of the reaction of dioxygen with hydridopalladium(II) and palladium(0) complexes. This Focus Review highlights the results of these experimental and theoretical studies that can contribute to the exploitation of the powerful nature of Pd II catalysis.
