This article traces the evolution and historical background of rheumatology nursing through the contribution of those who were a part of the process. The role and functions of the rheumatology nurse are revealed in the literature and the activities in which rheumatology nurses have been involved. Rheumatology nursing as aspecialty in itself or as a subspecialty of rehabilitation, orthopedic, or medical/surgical nursing is described.
