Assessment of the radiologic severity of rheumatoid arthritis in the hand was made from the presence of erosions, joint space narrowing and ankylosis. The degree of severity derived from this assessment correlated significantly with bone mass, as evaluated from measurements of the cortical thickness in the hand and in the proximal end of the forearm.
