Abstract We examined 121 men and women suffering from primary and secondary osteoarthritis of the hip with respect to age at orthopedic consultation, body weight, and height. Body weight distribution among patients with primary osteoarthritis of the hip was similar to that of patients with secondary osteoarthritis of the hip and to normal men and women in the United States. There was no correlation between age at orthopedic consultation and body weight. We conclude that body weight is not an important factor in the development of osteoarthritis of the hip. Primary osteoarthritis affects one or the other side or both sides with equal frequency. Individuals with bilateral disease were not older than those with unilateral disease. We conclude that the disease is unilateral or bilateral at its inception rather than progressing from one side to the other with time.
