The pathogenesis of mycoplasmal polyarthritis in rats was investigated by cultural and morphologic procedures. Virulent Mycoplasma , injected intravenously, localized in joint structures. Synovitis appeared within several days and rapidly advanced to suppurative arthritis and periosteal new bone formation. Arthritis of interspinal articulations produced hind limb paralysis. Lesions resolved with fibrosis, ankylosis and remodeling of new bone. Histologically, mycoplasmal arthritis resembled other forms of experimental suppurative arthritis, distinguishable only by isolation of the pathogenic agent.
