Hemopoietic marrow from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and controls was cultured in various substrate sera. The normal and some rheumatoid marrows were sensitive to the different iron concentrations of normal and rheumatoid sera. In rheumatoid patients with hypochromic anemia, the response of marrow to added iron in vitro agreed with the therapeutic response to intravenous iron. Patients with refractory normochromic anemia showed slightly abnormal erythropoiesis, but there was no evidence that their serum differed from that of non‐anemic patients. By this technic, evidence for stimulation of marrow by batyl alcohol or other agents was equivocal.
