The defensive military trenches of the first half of the twentieth century provide valuable insight into the typology, morphology and construction techniques of their era; however, only a small number of them still exist because of recent uncontrolled city growth. Historical (from 1938) and contemporary remote sensing data are used in this research for locating the sites of military trenches and to assess the extent of their disappearance in Greece. Examples of the different construction types of defensive military trenches can be found in the wider area around Kavala, Amphipolis, Thessaloniki, Trikala and Volos.
