An extended high‐resolution magnetic investigation was undertaken at the archaeological site in Kyme (Turkey). In order to obtain highly resolved digital raster images, the gradient data sets were processed by using digital image processing techniques. In addition to these sets of data, the magnetic field measurements acquired by the bottom sensor alone were also processed. A careful comparison between the gradient data magnetograms and the bottom sensor magnetograms revealed how the entire mosaic, elaborated by processing the bottom sensor data, could fruitfully integrate and improve the information inferred by the vertical gradient magnetograms. Finally, the main archaeological features outlined from this magnetic investigation, as well as the results of a first guided excavation, are presented. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
