Partial demethylation of homoveratronitrile (3a) with Lewis acids affords a mixture of the isomeric monophenols 3b and 3c . Separation of the isomers offers a new approach to N ‐norreticuline (1a) and its 6′‐halogen derivatives 1b,c .
