1‐(2‐Benzofuranyl)‐2‐(dichloroacetamido)propane‐1,3‐diol breaks down in a well‐defined manner upon electron impact. The principal ions formed are characterised and the most plausible mechanism of their formation is discussed. The results of in vitro antibacterial and antifungal screening of the benzofuran analog of chloramphenicol as well as its two precursors are reported.
