Current views about the Marquesan sequence are reviewed through a reassessment of the archaeological evidence from Hane. Particular attention is given to the stratigraphy, radiocarbon dating, adzes, fishhooks, harpoons, ornaments, pottery and faunal remains. These data suggest that the lower levels at Hane represent a single relatively brief phase of occupation, probably about the middle of the first millenium A.D., during the initial settlement of the Marquesas by people who had not come directly from West Polynesia.
