This paper describes the success of psychodynamically informed work with a schizo‐ phrenic woman after other treatment, including medication, family crisis intervention, repetitive hospitalizations, and electroconvulsive therapy, had failed to produce signif‐ icant results. In this case, psychoanalytic knowledge helped to integrate the requisite multi‐modal treatment and provided the necessary containment for an evolution in the patient's transference positions so that she could individuate from her family and make a better adaptation to the world in which she lived.
