A typology of applied psychoanalysis is offered as a tool for organizing and promoting efforts to use psychoanalytic concepts and interventions outside the traditional clinical consulting room. A brief review of the history of applied psychoanalysis is followed by the delineation of seven categories of applied psychoanalytic activity: psychoanalytic social advocacy, psychoanalytic social commentary, psychoanalysis in the community, psychoanalysis of the community, psychoanalytic interpretation in the academy, using data to promote social change, and developing the meta‐theory of applying psychoanalytic thought.
