Elliott Jaques' thesis on work is underpinned by his two‐dimensional analysis of time. This article recapitulates Jaques' main arguments, picking out their psychoanalytic origins. Jaques' analysis enabled him to create objective measures of human intention. His approach continues to suggest new modes of enquiry for the human sciences. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
