This figure by Oksana Zholobko and colleagues shows the micro‐tensile test specimens of polybenzimidazole (PBI) nanofiber membranes after heat‐pressing. The dimensions of the specimens are around 100 mm × 50mm × 42.5 µm. The continuous PBI nanofibers with the diameter of ~250 nm was produced by electrospinning, and the resulting nonwoven PBI nanofiber mats were heat‐pressed at varying temperature, pressure, and heating duration to form solid nanofiber membranes. The hygroscopic and mechanical behaviors of these PBI nanofiber membranes were characterized to examine their dependencies upon the heat‐pressing conditions, and further compared with those of solution‐cast PBI films.
