This image by Doris Pospiech and colleagues demonstrates that melt mixed lignin/polyester blends are developed to design novel precursors for carbon fibers in which the orientation of the polyester is employed to force the highly branched lignin molecules into a more ordered structure. Carefully purified and chemically modified Kraft lignin and thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters with tailored chemical structure form immiscible, partially compatibilized blends that are melt‐spinnable up to lignin contents of 40 wt%. The liquid crystalline polyester enhances the thermal stability of the lignin and contributes to successful conversion into carbon. DOI: 10.1002/app.48257
