Carbon nanofibers are widely studied in thermal management, conductive, scaffold and sensing applications. Chang Liu and Khalid Lafdi developed smooth and continuous carbon nanofibers by using polyacrylonitrile/pitch blends as a precursor. The obtained nanofiber (from blends) showed an increase in modulus and conductivity compared to the pristine one (from polymer). At the same time, the addition of pitch increases carbon yield and reduces cost. Their study provides a new strategy in making stronger continuous carbon nanofiber: using liquid crystalline molecule as additive. (DOI: 10.1002/app.45388 ).
