Multifunctional nanocomposite microspheres with strong plugging effect are highly desirable for petroleum engineering. Yangchuan Ke and colleagues report a new kind of nanocomposite plugging microspheres by encapsulating highly exfoliated montmorillonite nanolayers in (acrylamide/acrylic acid/2‐acrylamido‐2‐ methylpropanesulfonic acid) terpolymer matrix via in situ polymerization. Compared with traditional polymer plugging materials, the comprehensive properties of these obtained nanocomposite microspheres are significantly improved due to the efficient exfoliation of MMT nanolayers, especially surface morphology, viscoelasticity, thermal stability and plugging ability. These terpolymer nanocomposite microspheres can effectively enter the microchannels in deep formation and realize stable plugging. (DOI: 10.1002/app.44894 )
