JianBo Hu, Fei Cheng, Yi Lin, Kang Zhao and PuXin Zhu discuss the dissolution of starch in aqueous solutions containing urea and sodium hydroxide. Starch was found to dissolve in aqueous solution of 2–20 wt% urea and 10–1 wt% sodium hydroxide at –12 to 25°C. The optimized dissolution condition was in the aqueous solution containing 14 wt% urea and 4 wt% sodium hydroxide at 0°C. Such an aqueous solvent containing urea and sodium hydroxide may have potential use in starch processing and modification. (DOI: 10.1002/app.43390 )
