Zhuo Liu, Yinghong Chen and Weiwei Ding prepared a reinforced nanocomposite by incorporating inorganic SiO 2 –MgO–CaO whiskers along with hydroxyapatite nanoparticles into a polylactic acid matrix. The whiskers had interesting effects on PLA crystallization. On one hand, the incorporated whiskers enhanced melt crystallization of the composite; while, on the other hand, the whiskers inhibited the nucleation of PLA. However, the whiskers do not restrain the growth of crystals. The addition of an appropriate amount of whiskers reinforces and toughens the nanocomposite. (DOI: 10.1002/app.43381 )
