A novel antibacterial composite of coal/LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) loaded with silver ions (ACCPE) was prepared by means of solid–liquid phase adsorption and extrusion. The composite was characterized by IR, XRD and SEM, and the mechanical, rheological, and Ag + ‐releasing, and antibacterial properties of the composite were investigated. We discover that the ACCPE shows favorable mechanical properties, features a higher processability and antibacterial activity, and the coal and silver ion possess superimposed effect on antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli . © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
