Abstract A model is formulated for diffusion‐controlled polymer dissolution and simultaneous drug release for amorphous, uncrosslinked polymers. Calculated fractional drug release versus time curves are similar to experimental curves reported in the literature. Solutions of the transport equations provide a way of illustrating how polymer type and molecular weight can be used in an attempt to approach a constant drug release rate. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
