Catalysts for the raction of aromatic isocyanates with aromatic anhydrides to form imides were investigated using a model reaction. Alkali metal acetylacetone chelate compounds exhibited good catalytic efficiency and selectivity in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). These catalysts were used for the preparation of polymide foams. The resulting foams exhibited excellent fire resistance and thermal stability. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
