The effects of toluene on the kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by the Ce(IV)/sucrose redox system were studied in the presence of an emulsifier, N ‐cetyl‐trimethylammonium bromide (NCTAB) in the temperature range 35–45°C. The effects of concentration of metal ion, monomer, sulfuric acid, substrate (sucrose), emulsifier, toluene, some inorganic salt, and organic solvent on R p have also been investigated. The remarkable features of the investigation involve the derivation of the rate expression for the above system with the calculation of activation energy. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
