Styrene (St)–acrylonitrile (AN) copolymers were prepared with and without ferric nitrate by free radical polymerization at 70°C. TGA studies showed that the addition of ferric nitrate has some effect on the thermal behavior of the copolymer. Mössbauer, studies of the copolymer, heated at 150, 250, and 480°C for 15 min showed that during the thermal degradation Fe 3+ species was reduced to Fe 2+ , and then, finally, it formed α‐Fe 2 O 3 . The mechanism of thermal degradation has been proposed on the basis of IR, TGA, and Mössbauer studies.
