Sorption of SO 2 in latex paint films is measured as a function of time. This data is used to extract the solubility ( S ) and the diffusion coefficient ( D ) for SO 2 in these films. The solubility of SO 2 in each of the samples follows Henry's law behavior. Sorption occurs only in the polymer, with the inorganic pigment particles acting as impenetrable fillers. The diffusion of SO 2 is Fickin with an exponential dependence upon the concentration of SO 2 . This data is used to calculate the permeabilities of the paint samples to SO 2 , at levels typically found in the atmosphere.
