Plasma polymerization of nitroethane provided highly wettable films whose surface energy was 66 × 10 −3 N/m. The contact angle of water was 7 ± 2° at 20°C in air. This high wettability was maintained for a long duration of at least 2 months. Infrared and ESCA spectra showed that the plasma polymers contained no nitro groups and were composed of dehydrogenated carbon chains with a large amount of amido groups. The amido groups whose concentration reaches approximately 40% of the total carbon units may contribute to the high wettability.
