Analysis of an industrial ε‐caprolactam by gas–liquid chromatography has been carried out using different stationary phases and operating conditions. The impurities in the ε‐caprolactam are identified and hypotheses about their formation are presented. In some cases the presence either in cyclohexane or cyclohexanone of the possible impurity‐producing compounds is shown.
